Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is the name given to an incapacitating disorder which is generally distinguished by severe fatigue not linked to any physical exercise and is not relieved considerably by rest. Symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome are shared by several other disorders and therefore, CFS is occasionally termed post-viral fatigue syndrome and myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is currently not known.
The symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome appear through a wide range of areas. Furthermore, these symptoms usually may disappear and reappear suddenly without showing an identifiable pattern. Symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome can be categorized into groups such as energy related, pain related, flu-like, cognitive, psychological , sensitivities and cardio and respiratory. Several of the symptoms can also be caused by other conditions. Therefore, to be diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, the fatigue and the other symptoms must remain persistent after the treatment for these conditions. A physician might have to check the medical history of the patient including family health, past health issues, use of medication and the existence of any allergies, to diagnose the disease as CFS. Furthermore, blood and urine tests may also be required for the diagnosing process.
The symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome include energy related symptoms such as debilitating fatigue, extreme exhaustion after exercise continuing up to 24 hours or more and unrefreshing sleep. Pain related symptoms may range from morning stiffness to chest pains. In addition, flu-like symptoms such as joint pains without any swelling, muscle pains and sore throats may also appear. Cognitive symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome include the inability to concentrate, impaired reasoning and speech and disorientation. Furthermore, depression, anxiety and mood swings could also occur as psychological symptoms of CFS. Sensitivity and intolerance related symptoms may produce hypersensitivity and alcohol intolerance. The symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome tends to also appear though the cardio and respiratory related symptoms such as, abnormal heartbeat, shortness of breath and frequent respiratory tract infections.
Besides the main symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, several other symptoms such as chronic cough, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness loss of balance and fainting, dry mouth and weight loss or gain, have also been reported by patients. A considerable reduction in physical activity levels and the level of the complexity of the activities is also claimed .
These symptoms tend to worsen in some people while others tend to recover completely. Once the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome appear, it is better to seek medical attention swiftly, as early treatment could help to curb this disease.
